Car Not Accelerating

When something is off with your vehicle, you may be able to tell what the problem is based on the car's behavior. If you notice that the car seems less responsive or hesitant when you step on the gas pedal, you will know that it's time to take a look at the mechanical system. While problems with the mechanical system can be expensive and complex, an issue that impacts acceleration may ultimately be fairly easy to solve. To figure out what's wrong, consider these four most common causes.

Dirty Oxygen Sensor

Sensors in the mechanical system can easily get dirty and contaminated. One sensor that may suffer from dirt and dust exposure is the oxygen sensor, which works with the mass airflow sensor to help keep the fuel and air in your car's engine clean. The oxygen sensor won't monitor the air and fuel levels in the engine if it gets too dirty. If this happens, you might notice that the "Check Engine" light comes on in the car in addition to detecting problems with acceleration. Another similar component called the mass airflow sensor can also affect your car's engine performance if it becomes too dirty.

Malfunctioning Throttle Position Sensor

Another sensor in the engine that can develop problems is the throttle position sensor. The throttle position sensor helps the engine work appropriately by detecting the opening angle of the throttle valve. This sensor is connected to a computer in the car's engine. It tells the engine how to respond based on the angle opening. When the sensor gets too dirty, it can't process the information to the engine computer, altering how it operates and inadvertently slowing your car down.

Clogged Fuel Filter

The fuel filter is an essential component of the engine. The fuel filter normally prevents sludge, dirt, and debris from getting into the engine. However, the fuel filter can't process fuel going to the engine if it is dirty. That means contaminated fuel and inadequate fuel levels can both harm the engine and make your vehicle sluggish when you step on the accelerator.

Dirty Air Filter

The air filter is similar to the fuel filter, but it regulates the amount and quality of air going to the engine rather than fuel levels. The air filter can also get too dirty and prevent air from reaching the engine, which is required for the combustion that enables the car to run.
