How do you train a deaf Aussie? You use hand signs and body language. Dogs experience the world with their nose first, then eyes, then ears. For humans, it is just the opposite. Most people don't realize that their body movements and facial expressions are being read by their dog, but animals are much more in tune with reading body language than humans are. So, for a deaf dog, a hand sign for "sit" is the same thing as a verbal command. A frown that goes with the word "no" can be easily interpreted by a deaf dog. You can use basic ASL (American Sign Language) commands on your dog; we encourage you to try some of the signs on our Hand Signs page or create some of your own. We suggest modifying any sign to one hand if possible (your other hand may be holding the leash or a treat) and stay consistent with all commands.
